Tesla Summon is a driver-assistance feature that enables your Tesla to move forward or backward autonomously in tight spaces, controlled via the Tesla mobile app. This function is particularly useful for maneuvering your vehicle into or out of narrow parking spots without the need for you to be inside the car.

What Can Tesla Summon Do?

Tesla offers two primary Summon functionalities:

  1. Standard Summon (also known as “Dumb Summon”):
    • Moves the vehicle forward or backward in a straight line.
    • Ideal for situations like tight garage spaces or narrow parking spots.
    • Controlled via the Tesla app or key fob.
  2. Actually Smart Summon (ASS):
    • Allows the vehicle to navigate complex environments, such as parking lots, to reach your location or a designated point.
    • Utilizes the car’s cameras and sensors to detect obstacles and plan a path.
    • Requires the driver to maintain a clear line of sight and continuous supervision.
    • Activated through the Tesla mobile app.

How to Use Tesla Summon

For Standard Summon:

  1. Open the Tesla app and select ‘Summon’.
  2. Use the forward or reverse buttons to move the vehicle accordingly.

For Actually Smart Summon:

  1. Open the Tesla app and tap on ‘Summon’.
  2. Select ‘Smart Summon’.
  3. Choose between:
    • Come to Me: The car navigates to your current GPS location.
    • Go to Target: You set a specific location on the map, and the car drives there.
  4. Press and hold the ‘Go to Target’ or ‘Come to Me’ button to initiate movement. Releasing the button stops the vehicle.

Note: The vehicle requires continuous supervision, and you must be within approximately 200 feet (60 meters) of the car.

Limitations and Safety Considerations

  • Supervision Required: Always maintain a clear line of sight to your vehicle and be prepared to stop it immediately.
  • Environmental Conditions: Summon features are designed for use in private parking lots and driveways. Avoid using them on public roads.
  • Obstacle Detection: While the vehicle uses sensors to detect obstacles, it may not recognize all hazards, especially low or overhanging objects.
  • Connectivity: A stable internet connection is necessary for the Tesla app to communicate effectively with the vehicle.
