What is Tesla Full Self-Driving? Price, How It Works, Requirements

Full Self-Driving (FSD) is Tesla’s most advanced driver-assistance package that enables your car to navigate highways, change lanes, park itself, recognize traffic signals, and even drive through city streets — with supervision. Despite the name, it does not make your Tesla fully autonomous.

What Can Tesla FSD Do?

Here’s what’s included in Full Self-Driving:

Feature Included in FSD?
Navigate on Autopilot ✅
Auto Lane Change ✅
Autopark (Parallel + Perpendicular) ✅
Summon ✅
Smart Summon ✅
Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control ✅
City Street Driving (FSD Beta) ✅ (Beta Program)

What is Navigate on Autopilot? – Learn how Tesla drives itself on highways.

How Does FSD Work?

Tesla’s FSD system uses:

  • 8 external cameras
  • Tesla Vision (camera-only perception, no radar)
  • Neural networks trained on billions of miles of driving data
  • Real-time AI decision-making
  • Maps, GPS, and Tesla’s in-house chip (HW3 or HW4)

All this allows the car to “see” its surroundings, interpret traffic signals, plan routes, and make driving decisions — but you must remain attentive and ready to take over.

What FSD Is Not

  • FSD is not autonomous driving.
The car cannot legally or safely drive itself without human supervision.
  • You must keep your hands on the wheel.
Tesla will warn or disengage the system if it detects you’re inattentive.
  • It’s still in Beta.
City street driving (aka “FSD Beta”) is being tested by select Tesla owners in the U.S.

What is Tesla Autopilot? – Compare with Tesla’s standard driver-assist features.

City Street Driving with FSD Beta

FSD Beta allows your Tesla to:

  • Navigate local roads
  • Make turns at intersections
  • Respond to traffic lights and stop signs
  • Handle roundabouts, pedestrians, and cyclists

However, this feature is still under development. Tesla selects drivers with high Safety Scores to test FSD Beta.

What is Tesla Safety Score? – Learn how it determines your eligibility for Beta access.

FSD Pricing

  • One-Time Purchase: ~$12,000 USD
  • Subscription: $99–$199/month depending on vehicle

Prices may vary by country and vehicle model.

Where Is FSD Available?

FSD Beta is currently available in:

  • United States (most states)
  • Canada (limited release)
  • Other countries: Highway-only features work, but city driving features are not fully released due to local regulations

Requirements

  • Tesla Hardware 3.0 or higher (HW3 or HW4)
  • Active Tesla account
  • Tesla app and over-the-air update enabled
  • Good Safety Score (for Beta)

If your vehicle has older hardware, you may need a computer upgrade to use FSD features.
